In the past, the wedding in the village of Galichnik was traditionally held on July 12th, the feast of St. Peter (Petrovden). The event was deeply tied to the return of migrant workers (pechalbari) coming home from abroad for the summer. Back in the village, the young bachelors were eagerly awaited by their fiancées, who sometimes remained betrothed for up to two years waiting for their return.
Because of this, multiple weddings took place on this exact day in the past—sometimes reaching as many as 20 or 30 couples marrying at once. These celebrations were filled with rich customs and an abundance of traditional wedding songs, which have been documented by numerous ethnologists. Here is one such song, traditionally sung as the groom's wedding party arrives to fetch the bride:
"Why, dear maiden, do these strangers gather, singing for you, dear maiden, up on the verandas? What sits waiting for you, dear maiden, up on the verandas? What sits waiting, dear maiden, is wine and rakija. Those are my companions, my dearest family, those are my companions, my father and mother-in-law.
Today, the famous Galichnik Wedding has grown into a highly popular cultural manifestation. It stands as a powerful guardian of our cultural heritage, keeping alive the authentic wedding rituals, traditional folk costumes, exquisite jewelry, and the ancient protective magic meant to ensure fertility and the continuation of the family lineage.
