Two years since the passing of one of the most renowned authors and urban planners in Macedonia.
Mimoza Nestorova-Tomić (Struga, 21 June 1929 – Skopje, 24 May 2024).
As an architect, planner, and urbanist, alongside Kenzo Tange, she played a significant role in the preparation of the main master plan for the reconstruction of Skopje after the 1963 earthquake. Between 1986 and 1989, Mimoza Tomić served as the chief architect of the City of Skopje. As part of the team at the City Institute for Urbanism and Architecture, she worked on the Detailed Urban Plan for the Old Skopje Bazaar, the reconstruction of Suli An, the revitalization of the Old Bazaar and Čifte Hammam; she was also the author of the project for the “Beko” department store, the Museum of Macedonia (together with Kiril Muratovski), and the reconstruction of the interior of Universal Hall.
She received the “13 November” Award for the Museum of Macedonia project (1973), as well as the lifetime achievement award “Andreja Damjanov” from the Association of Architects of Macedonia. Mimoza Nestorova-Tomić, together with Kiril Muratovski, were the authors of the Museum of Macedonia building, which officially opened in 1976, exactly 50 years ago.
